to fill our Ranks!
We are a family-oriented unit based in Ohio that portrays a German mercenary group known as Landsknecht, from 1486 to 1560. You may call our company Das Nachtjäger Fähnlein (The Night Hunter Company). We welcome enthusiastic volunteers interested in having fun.
read moreYour Landsknecht adventures start with a colorful overview of life in the Holy Roman Empire. The trip begins in the year 1486 with the formation of the first trained Landsknecht (translates to "Servants of the Land") under Hapsburg leader Maximillian I.
In an era when commoners were prohibited by law from wearing certain colors, gaudy or expensive attire, Landsknecht were granted an Imperial exemption. They wore oversized hats festooned with feathers and sported "puff and slash" clothing in a multitude of expensive colors.
The Tross were the camp followers or baggage train who traveled with each Landsknecht unit, carrying military necessities, the food, and the belongings of each soldier and his family. Women and young boys set up Landsknecht camps, cooked, mended injuries, and dug and cleaned latrines. A Landsknecht was usually forbidden by his Bestallungsbrief from having more than one woman in the baggage train. The Tross was overseen by a Hurenweibel, who established the number of representatives for each craft, as well as the prices they could charge.
Our school visits and special presentations can include hands-on learning of pike drills (with shorter, safe poles), a human bobbin, bobbin lace demonstration, learning how to play period games, and much more.
